Fruit for the Crows tells the story of Nura’s lover Giap (named after the Vietnamese leader) and the lives of those he knows. Their interlocking stories reveal comrades’ struggle for power in the Socialist regime of Aden, Yemen, in the 1970s and 1980s. It shows how old tribal allegiances and family bonds win over slogans of internationalist comradeship then flaunted; the very slogans that drew left-wing Arabs to this Yemeni city, to exile and aborted dreams.
